Your Day Yachting in Newport Begins Here

Arrive at your yacht and be greeted by the crew with a warm smile and a chilled cocktail. Leave your worries at the dock and take off to enjoy Narragansett Bay with the iconic Pell Bridge as the backdrop for family photos.

Cruise past Rose Island and catch one of the many sailboat regattas that makes Newport the home of yacht racing. Just this last May, Newport was the only stop in North America for The Ocean Race, “sailing’s greatest round the world challenge”, a grueling five-month, 32,000 mile race, won by Newport’s hometown heroes the 11th Hour Racing Team.

The entrance of Newport Harbor is truly a boater’s paradise, as classic 12-metre sailing yachts, high-performance multihulls, traditional schooners, and day cruisers all share the waters between Newport and the neighboring island community of Jamestown. There’s so much to see.

Ask your captain about the history of Hammersmith Farm, the site of JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy’s wedding reception, or inquire about the curious “Clingstone”, an early-20th century 23-room house perched on top of a pile of rocks just off the shore of Jamestown.

Experience a Day of Yachting Fun in Mackerel Cove

Settle in for the day, playing with the water toys, relaxing with your loved ones, and enjoying a delicious barbeque prepared by your chef. Mackerel Cove is a fantastic option to spend the day, or you can jump in the tender and explore local coves and nearby Fort Wetherill.

Make your way to Mackerel Cove on Conanicut Island, drop the hook and enjoy a day at anchor. Mackerel Cove is a favorite spot with locals for raft ups, swimming and watersports on hot days.

On the way to Mackerel Cove, you’ll pass the majestic estate, Horsehead-Marbella, named after a unique feature in the underlying rock face of the property, and in the distance see Beavertail Lighthouse, built in 1856, marking the entrance of the West Passage of Narragansett Bay.

On the way back to port, cruise past charming Castle Hill Inn, with its white adirondack chairs dotting its expansive green lawn. A ‘must-do’ when you come to Newport, the historic inn is the ideal spot to watch the sunset if you are onshore, but, honestly, it’s even more fun to wave at its patrons as you glide by.

The Perfect End to a Yachting Day in Newport

End your day with a traditional Newport “harbor burn”, hugging the shoreline from Fort Adams, a strategic military fortification originally built in 1799, now home to the beloved Newport Folk Festival and Jazz Festival each summer. Other highlights include the historic home Beacon Rock and the famed New York Yacht Club’s majestic Harbour Court with its green and white-striped awning and imposing hill.

The Ida Lewis Yacht Club, named after a local heroine lighthouse keeper responsible for saving no less than eighteen lives, sits on an outcropping of limestone. Run down past the wharves to catch live music and observe the bustling restaurants and bars of Bowen’s Wharf.

The perfect ending to such a spectacular day? Enjoy dinner onboard, or make your way to the Clarke Cooke House on Bannister’s Wharf for one of their infamous espresso martinis and swap sea stories at one of the legendary establishment’s lively bars.
